Tim Cahill

I’m a professional footballer for the Socceroos and Melbourne City.

I grew up in Sydney with my sister and two brothers before I moved to England when I was a teenager to follow my dream of playing football.

I have played with Millwall and Everton in the UK, New York Red Bulls in America, Shanghai Shenhua and Hangzhou Greentown in China and now play with Melbourne City in the A-League.

I got into writing because I loved book club when I was at school and wanted to tell stories from my career in a way that would be fun for kids to read.

Getting to Know Tim Cahill

Game On: How did you get into writing?

I wanted to make books that I would have liked to read as a kid. I wanted to base the stories off things that have happened to me in my football career but add in great illustrations and fun characters.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I always wanted to be a footballer first and foremost! I loved Book Club when I was at school though and making reading fun for kids is something that I’m really passionate about.

What are some of your favourite games to play?

Anything outside is great. I love playing all kinds of games with my kids, whether it’s tennis, basketball, football or any other activities.

Do you have a favourite sport, sporting event or sporting hero?

My favourite sport isn’t too hard to guess! I think the World Cup is my favourite sporting event and my sporting heroes are Pele and Maradona.

What kinds of activities do you like to do to supercharge your summers?

Lots of time in the pool with my family! My season runs over summer so I have lots of playing and training to do but when I’m not doing that it’s all about spending time with my wife and kids.

Can you recommend some good GAME ON reads for our SRC Club Members?

“Game Day” by my mate Patty Mills is a really good series!

A Creative Tip

Make things funny!

Especially with kids books, it’s all about making things fun! Funny characters and cool illustrations are a really good place to start. I like to run ideas by my own kids and they’ve made some great suggestions for Tiny Timmy.
