Katrina Germein

It’s quite surprising that I became an author. For one, I’m terrible at spelling. (I hate it when people look over my shoulder while I’m writing because I know they’ll spot the errors.) Also, when I went to school computers weren’t common and everything had to be written by hand. Teachers were OBSESSED with neat handwriting. Mine was terrible (still is). So my school reports focused on my poor spelling and terrible handwriting. Nobody thought I’d grow up to write books. I’m glad everyone was wrong because I love writing and my author life is full of surprises.

Last year, I was flown to Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to present at a Reading Festival. It was super fun. (Although, I don’t recommend going four-wheel driving through the desert dunes if you get carsick like me – bad idea.) Writing a football book was a surprise too because there was a time when I didn’t know anything about Aussie Rules. Then my son Hugo grew in a footy fanatic and I watched him play so many matches that I thought I’d write a book about it. I often write books about family. My book, ‘My Dad Thinks He’s Funny’ was Highly Commended in the Prime Minister’s Literacy awards a few years ago. That was a surprise too. I like surprises. I wonder what my next one will be.

Getting to Know Katrina Germein

Game On: How did you get into writing?

I’m always reading. I think when you fill your head with so many stories sooner or later you’re going to grow one of your own. That’s what happened to me anyway. One day I woke up with a story in my head that wouldn’t go away. I had to write it down to set it free. That story became my first book, Big Rain Coming.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

No. It was a surprise! When I was younger I thought authors were special magic people or something. I didn’t realise people who simply loved reading and writing could become authors.

What are some of your favourite games to play?

My children taught me to play the Scandinavian game, Finska this year. We’re lucky we have a big hallway so we could play inside during winter. We also like playing hallway footy (with a small, soft ball) and hallway golf. We have a little indoor basketball ring as well.

Do you have a favourite sport, sporting event or sporting hero?

Netball was always my favourite sport at school but now I like running. I’m pretty slow, and it doesn’t take me long to work up a sweat, but I enjoy puffing along and listening to music on my iPod.

What kinds of activities do you like to do to supercharge your summers?

Going to the beach! Summer is my favourite season. I adore warm weather and swimming in the ocean makes me super happy. And reading, or course.
