Jack Heath

I’ve written eighteen action-packed books about spies, double crosses, false identities and deadly escapes. My new book, The Fail Safe, is about a kid desperately trying to prevent a nuclear war.

In the course of my research I have trained with firearms, performed street magic, visited morgues and prisons, and travelled through Russia.

When I’m not touring schools, libraries and festivals around the world, I live in Canberra with my wife and our son.

Getting to know Jack Heath

Game On: How did you get into writing?

I started writing a book when I was thirteen, because I was bored by the book we had to read for English and I thought I could do better. I finished my book when I was seventeen and sent it off to a publisher. It sold well enough that I got to write twenty more!

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always loved writing stories, and I think as soon as I discovered that people were out there making doing that, I decided it would be my profession.

What are some of your favourite games to play?

I enjoy board games like Codenames, Avalon, Rock Paper Wizard and Lifeboat. I also play videogames, such as Portal, Bioshock Infinite, Metal Gear Solid and Telltale’s Batman.

Do you have a favourite sport, sporting event or sporting hero?

I don’t play sports anymore—unless yoga counts—but I like the Olympics. I’m interested in the hard limits to how fast a human being can run, how much they can lift, how high they can jump, and so on.

What kinds of activities do you like to do to supercharge your summers?

In summer I always take my bodyboard to the beach, and after I’ve caught a few waves, I read on the sand.

Can you recommend some good GAME ON reads for our SRC Members?

Hover Car Racer by Matthew Reilly and Lifespan of Starlight by Thalia Kalkipsakis are both a blast, and feature extremely competitive characters.

Creative Tip

It’s okay to be bored. . .

Give yourself time to be bored! Your brain will fill the void with ideas.
