Getting to Know Stephanie Bendixsen

Game On: How did you get into writing?

I have always loved to read, and my love of writing came from a desire to one day write the kinds of books I like to read, too! But pursuing a career in video games and television, I always thought writing books would be something I would have a go at much later in life! However it was my love of video games that provided the platform for me to write my first book with my long-time friend, Steven. Now we’re writing our way through our own imaginary video game together!

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Absolutely. For as long as I’ve been a reader, I’ve wanted to be a writer. I love anything that allows me to escape – books, games, movies… I love spending time in other worlds.

What are some of your favourite games to play?

I love action adventure games, and open world fantasy games. Dragon Land was such a fun book to write because I was writing my favourite genre so it came really easily.

Do you have a favourite sport, sporting event or sporting hero?

I’ll be completely honest… no, not really. Sport has never really been my ‘thing’. That said, I have been dabbling in archery on and off over the last few years. And pretty soon competitive gaming or ‘esports’ is going to be in the Olympics, so… how exciting is that!

What kinds of activities do you like to do to supercharge your summers?

I love hiking, camping and travelling – anything that breaks me out of my usual routine.

Can you recommend some good GAME ON reads for our SRC Club Members?

Pixel Raiders, of course! It’s full of action, adventure, DANGER… and loads of fun video game references.

But other than that, when I was younger I adored a series of books called The Fleabag Trilogy – it was about a cat and a kitchen maid who go on a thrilling fantasy adventure. Also – Animorphs!

A Creative Tip

Visualise your characters. Write your own stories.

I loved to draw the characters from my favourite books, it would make the characters all the more real to me. Sometimes, I would write my own ‘fan fiction’ – stories set within the world of the books I loved reading. These are all great ways to get your creative juices flowing!
