Bajo and Hex

Steven ‘Bajo’ O’Donnell

Steven ‘Bajo’ O’Donnell is an Australian television presenter, actor, Twitch streamer, children’s author and video game critic. Bajo has hosted the weekly ABC video game review shows Good Game, and children’s version Spawn Point for the last 11 years.

He grew up on a farm in Toowoomba, which is where he found his love of video games.   That grew into a love of science fiction, and he’s an avid reader of anything involving space ships or disgruntled robots!

Do you like aliens and detective stories? Do you like goo in Bajo’s face? Bajo recently co-created and played the lead in the Sci-Fi narrative comedy Trip For Biscuits. The nerd cred continues, as he was also a regular panellist on ‘Whovians’, a talk show about Doctor Who hosted by Rove.

Getting to Know Steven O’Donnell

Game On: How did you get into writing?

I have written many scripts before, but never a full book! We were approached by book publisher Scholastic to write a book set in a video game. It was a great idea, and Stephanie and I went to work at developing storylines and characters, and then a year later we had Pixel Raiders!

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I’d always fantasied about writing a book, but never had an idea where to start! Luckily, working in video games for a decade has provided ample source material!

What are some of your favourite games to play?

I love big open world games, where you see a whole universe alive and you get to live in that world and be a part of it!

Do you have a favourite sport, sporting event or sporting hero?

I am awful at sport. So bad. I do like bicycle riding though, and e-sport (electronic sport!).

What kinds of activities do you like to do to supercharge your summers?

I swim at the beach as much as possible, and ride my scooter around for fun. Toot toot!

Can you recommend some good GAME ON reads for our SRC Members?

I’m sorry I can’t at the moment, everything I’m reading is pretty adult heavy (e.g. Skullduggery Pleasant, Dresden files).. Any ideas?

A Creative Tip

Work, work, work!

Everything you do for the first time will not be perfect. In fact, it’ll probably be bad. Terrible even. Work hard, learn, be able to adapt and take criticism. That’s how you get good!
