The Amazing Read

“My favourite childhood book is “Two Weeks With the Queen”, by Morris Gleitzman.

Sometimes sad books can be funny, and funny books can be sad. Morris Gleitzman’s books were both. I loved them mainly for their sense of humour, but underneath it all was usually a sentimental story that pulled at the heart strings. “Two Weeks With the Queen” follows the adventures of Colin, whose brother has been diagnosed with cancer. (See, doesn’t sound funny, does it?) Colin decides that if only he could borrow the Queen’s top doctor, his brother will be OK, so he sets about trying to make contact with Her Majesty.

I loved the book so much that I picked up a pen and wrote to the author, never dreaming he’d write back to a lowly ten-year-old. To my surprise, he did – and he continued replying to each letter I sent. Even though I was a proud nerd, being pen-pals with a famous author made me pretty cool for a few days. It almost made me venture outside the library … but I never did. There were too many more books to read.”
